DMA
Direct memory access. A capability of some bus architectures that enables a bus controller to transfer data directly between a device (such as a disc drive) and a device with physically addressable memory, such as that on a computer’s motherboard. The microprocessor is freed from involvement with the data transfer, thus speeding up overall computer operation. See also bus master.
