Life of Pi

Life of Pi is a 2012 adventure film adopted from the 2001 fantasy adventure novel by Yann Martel. The movie won 4 Oscars at the 2013 Academy Awards ceremony.

The film is about a 16-year old Indian boy named Piscine Molitor "Pi" Patel, who suffers a shipwreck on his way to Canada in which his family dies. Pi is left stranded in the Pacific Ocean on a lifeboat for nearly seven months with little but his faith and a full-grown Bengal tiger named Richard Parker. The film used stunning visual images to tell the unbelievable survival storeys of Pi and the Bengal tiger after the tiger killed the hyena, which had previously killed the zebra and orangutan all on the stranded lifeboat.

At the conclusion of the novel Pi is interviewed by a pair of Japanese insurance representatives who are rather sceptical about his claims. They ask Pi over and over to tell them "what really happened," and in turn prompt Pi to regale a different storey of adventure; one that is far more believable. In Pi's second tale the lifeboat is void of zebras, hyenas, orangutans, or tigers. It is instead occupied by Pi, his mother, an injured sailor, and the ship's cook. In the end, the reinsurance representatives choose to believe Pi's 2nd story.

The film is directed the Academy award winning director Ang Lee, whose 2000 film 'Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon' won multiple international awards.
