iPad trademark

The registered trade name of Apple's popular iPad computers in the U.S and many other countries except China. The trademark allows Apple to use the term "iPad" exclusively to market and sell its products in global markets.

The iPad name has been subject to a trademark infringement lawsuit with a potential to stop the sales of Apple iPads in China altogether. It turns out Proview Technology in Shenzhen had registered the trademark in 2000 for the terms iPAD and IPAD in China for its IP application development business.

Apple began selling iPads in China in September 2010. It was met with Proview’s complaint in 2011, seeking 240 million yuan ($38 million USD) in damages. Apple later countersued, but the case was dismissed. In the latest development, Proview Technology filed an injunction order with the Beijing court, seeking for Apple to temporarily discontinue the selling and marketing of the iPad in China. Proview also claims 10 billion yuan ($1.6 billion USD) in damages.
